My name is Lata - I am 25 and studying for a PhD in physics here in Bristol.  I am into all musics, but the dance music I like most is DnB. I also like breaks, beats, UK hip hop, trip hop, electronica, reggae, jazz, very early house and rare groove, indian music, brazilian music.  Does that leave anything else?

I really like deep DnB; I love Polar, Klute, Kemal, Tech Itch, Dom, TeeBee (in fact everything from Subtitles and C18) and I adore Soul:r, Hospital, edits, plus a hell of a lot of other stuff. Recently I've been getting into guitars and acoustic and folk stuffs, and also more into Indian and other Asian styles.

I like all music with a soul really. The album that made me fall in love with d&b was Metalheadz' Platinum Breakz but these days you're more likely to find me listening to stuff by Klute, Calibre and most Hospital Records artists.

Apart from d&b, I love old fashioned and neo soul, all sorts of jazz, a lot of hiphop, what I call lazy house, some breaks and stuff from the Sonar Kollektiv, Ninja, Tru Thoughts and BBE labels. I don't care what it is I'm listening to, if it makes me laugh, smile, dance or gives me the shivers (and not the way spooky stammering man-child Gareth Gates does), it gets my vote. Er, in other words, emotive stuff.

Living in a town immersed in quality d&b has spoiled me and left me very fussy. The more I follow the scene, the more it takes to get me excited about d&b, and I sometimes feel disillusioned with it as too few true innovations are being made and there's too much emphasis on remixes. But then I'll hear an amazing, mind-blowing tune that will restore my faith, innit

I've always maintained that variety is the spice of life and over the past year or so I've seen more live music and more non-d&b than I could ever hope for - and I'm pretty pleased with the results. When Jazzanova's Jurgen Von Knoblauch dropped London Elektricity's Billion Dollar Gravy amongst the deep house and soul earlier this year @ Seen, I had a "moment" - that tune had never sounded even half as brilliant. Putting it in a non-d&b context totally invigorated my passion for it, and for d&b full stop.

So I guess what I'm saying is, you can have too much of a good thing...!

You might be thinking, er, so what has this got to do with you and who you are? Well I tend to go on a bit, big fan of the stream of consciousness biznizz, and basically suffer from a permanent case of the verbal squits. As demonstrated here.

OK... I like music, I like Drum and Bass, but I have to say that I don't know 1/2 as much about it as a lot of people that post on this board. I use Hijack partly to chat to other people who go to the nights I go to, partly to learn about Drum and Bass and what other peoples views on tunes and music in general are, and partly to relieve the skull numbing boredom of work. Not that I dislike my job, but all jobs have those long drawn out boring bits where you end up staring out of a window... well there's no window down here... Hijack is my window!

I can find something to appreciate in most types of music, with the exception of commercial house and trance (WHAT IS THE POINT IN IT... I DON'T UNDERSTAND!?!?!). Obviously this is a huge generalisation and there is a lot of music I don't like, but not really any genre as a whole.

D'n'B-wise, my first experience was an old helter skelter Shy FX tape, that had been copied about 18 times (nice quality!) which a mate gave me when I was about 16(ish). I liked the Chopper muchly! But most of my mates (in Cheltenham) thought I was a bit wierd so I didn't shout about it too much, and as a result didn't realise the huge expanse of D'n'B there was out there until I got to Bristol 5 years ago.

A big yummy yummy going out to (at the moment) High Contrast, TeeBee, London Elektricity, Makoto, Klute... (and the little known Resistance and D-tek'd, coz they're my mates, innit) ooo... the list is actually quite endless and I've rambled enough...

Away from music and Drum and Bass, I work in the Radio Industry, although not actually in a station. My dream is to start up my own station playing some 1/2 decent music, but right now I'm producing adverts for local car dealerships and the such...

I'm about to enter my third year of Computer Science at Bristol Uni.  Hopefully.

I like DnB, but can't exactly say what types.  Dark, liquid, jump-up, breaky, steppy, I don't care.  If it moves me in any way, I'll probably buy it.  I also like breaks, even if most of the stuff I seem to listen to is wank.  I have turntables and plenty of vinyl, dnb and breaks.  I also like a bit of house, hip-hop (mainly old school and stuff with breakbeats in) and other electronic music.  I think the only things I don't like are trance, hard-house and cheesy new jump-up dnb.

I don't have a job and find it hard to get people to come out to clubs with me, hence my general club-lameness. I got in to dnb from a couple of CDs I'd mini-disced off my sister. I was already in to music as it is, and these CDs just made me looker harder.  I was living in the country up in Cumbria at the time, and there was (is) no underground scene where I was.  Other than the goths.  So, after doing my A-levels, I moved to Bristol, cos of the DnB.  That and the record shops.

Had a place to study genetics at Imperial college London, declined to work as full-time volunteer for a Christian charity in a town near Bristol called Thornbury.

A big fan of creative and passionate music. I get excited by music that does things I've never heard before but that also moves my emotions. When i first heard drum and bass the sounds used were so unlike anything i'd ever heard and the intensity meant i could really get into it. I started buying records and eventually ended up djing the stuff I think I wanted to get more involved in the music than just listening to it. I've always been a big fan of what I would call 'rollers', tunes that groove wether dark or liquid. Fave artists include, Teebee (probably fave DJ after seeing him at locus this year) Klute, Calibre, Photek, AI, etc.

So Now I promote and DJ at The Rubiks Cube, It started coz me and some mates wanted to run a night that was more than just a night but a community building thing. It's a difficult job but I think we've almost got the night we started out to try and create.

I think I'm a nice guy. I am ginger but I try and break the stereotypes. I'm Christian which is where me values and morals come from which can be quite challenging within the DnB scene but good fun.

I'm a big of fan of 'in words' (jargon you only use with close mates) so.. Shemal, Vibes, Shem, Hold Tight The...

Part of Freakeasy, which is a live Hiphop ting, and some of us run a studio where we write breaks and stuff, and we manage a few local producers & vocalists. Running record label on the side too.

Basically, music is it for me, although I have got a day job to pay the bills atm. It's all I've been doing, from playing in orchestras and bands to DJing at and putting on nites. I love it so much cos it's a great unifying force - I mean, look at us, acquainted only over the infraweb, and all because of a common interest.........there's not many things that bring people together like music does.

Agree with Jem re: MetalHeadz.. that helped to get me hooked, as well as Full Cycle (but opinions change after a few years huh?), Roni etc.. recently has to be poplar, klute, tee b, calbre, photek.. blah blah.. but I have got a special place in my heart for real heavy dub.. esp DUBADELIC.. feckin wicked! bristol soundz too like Tricky, Massive (older stuff far better),portishead. Also LAMB and Sneaker Pimps.

Now I is at work, and bored witless.. Hijack gives me some hope.. or should I say any distraction really.. but hijack recently has been a priority.. some funny giza's on yer.

God. Where do i start?

Well, music's been essential to my life, ever since my aunty bought me Prince Charming by Adam and the Ants when i was about 5. Seriously got into tunage when i got my Amiga and started playing with OctaMed (yes!), writing old breaks and house stuff - pretty simple 4 track shit, but, yknow, at 13 it's all you can do.

Started to get heavily into the rave scene, but too young to be a raver so just bought every CD and Record i could - and because of that i've now got tunes which would cost you a fortune! Natural progression was then onto DJing, and got my first set of decks when i was about 17 (Disco 200's i think they were).

Old Skool was very tricky to mix and expensive, so started getting into house (you could get many a good Todd Terry/Roger Sanchez remix for 50p in Rival...) and this the foundation of my first true love - US House. Played about with Techno when i was 18/19, but then DnB appeared.

Now, I say DnB rather than Jungle. To me, jungle was the period about 95-97 when it was dark, minimal (really just crazy drums and bass), lots of gunshot samples and some ragga. I wasn't interested in this. The first things that started to turn my head were Platinum Breakz 1, and the emergence of a more "mature" musical sound (i wont go thru the tracks :p).

At Uni, I actually did a Drama degree and i really thought this is where my life was going to go. I loved it a great deal (acting, writing and directing), but it was always the music that made me rush. I composed the sound for nearly all plays, even working in Optical/Dom and Roland's "Quadrant 6" into a production of Oedipus, and using various shards of DnB tunes throughout the play.

I got a first for that one.

During this period tho, i was also resident DJ, playing with Mickie Finn, Goldie, Randall...loads of em. Mickey even has a copy of one of my first tunes on MD...lucky boy. lol

Moved down to Bristol in 99, wanting to get into the drama world as a writer or director, and, after writing a sitcom and it getting read and refused at Channel 4, i couldn't be arsed any more. TO be honest, writing was the last thing I wanted to do, especialy as i was working as a secretary.

Plus Fruity Loops was much more fun.

And then someone gave me Reason.

And that kinda changed my life. Suddenly I was able to use a programme that easy to get wkd sounds out of, and much more freedom and manipulation possibilites than anything else. I must have written over 70 tunes since then, some not bad, some not great, some pretty wkd (imo) - the important thing is: they're finished tracks. Drama taught me one thing - structure and the completed form gives the most satisfaction.

Now, I'm Programme Leader for Creating Music Thru Technology course at Access to Music, and whilst I don't want to teach forever, i've made some excellent contacts and wormed my way deeper into the music world. Tho not necessarily the DnB scene. It's hard to get work as a DJ, especially in this town, and especially if you're not part of a cru or particular scene (pity the hermit caner...lol), and this is why i'm trying me hardest to write good dnb that will get me some respect from my peers....and get me some DJ work.

My names Tim Im 23(nearly 24)6ft 4" Skin head with some dope new Nike TN's!! Have been living up at home in Derby for the last year having lived in Bristol previous to that for 4/5 years. Im moving back in a couple of weeks, Im starting a new job etc so all change for me at the mo.

My musical progression has been a bit of weird one in all fairness mainly due to my older brother. Started off getting into proper early 90's grunge and the whole Brit pop thing. Fukin loved that then when I hit about 16, it all became about Hip Hop which rapidly progressed to Drum and Bass about a year or two after that and that been it for the last 5-6 years - Looking back on it it seems obvious that this was going to happen as regardless of what music I was listening to at any one stage I always thought things sounded better with the bass on full!

Finally got round to buying decks about 3 years ago and havent been of them since really. See, Im gutted (now) that I jacked in the Piano and Violin and all that when I was a kid but I look on Djing as pretty much like playing any instrument (albeit a fairly modern one!) Started the whole production thing at the beg of this year but am hitting in propa on my return.

In terms of what DnB I actually like - Im always rubbish at this because I tend to be able to sit on the fence on almost all types of DnB and appreciate what others like about it and therefore enjoy it myself to a certain extent -I think the key to me is variety - I love my dirty amen smashers, I love my laid back calibre type stuff. I love my tech step and I love my jump up and more intelligent less dancefloor orientated stuff, I love anthems I love Dillinja (for the BASS) but all in certain amounts - I cant have all of one and none of the other. And I totally agree with Lata when she says all types of DnB have their place within DnB and people should respect that instead of constantly hating what they personally dont like (fukin puritans!)

In terms of other music now Id say my next love after DnB is Hip Hop but I say that but I m so so so so behind nowadays. It really is all about DnB for me - but maybe some of you lot could educate me on my return?...

Been DJ'ing for about 7 years and growing my dreads all that time so I am firmly rooted in the vinyl & herb culture.

Started out on Techno (back in 1994 when it was still interesting & unique) and progressed through hip-hop, big beat and nu-skool breaks to drum and bass which I started getting into in a major way from 1999 onwards.

Having played at many many house parties & random events during my A-levels and year off I went to London (UCL) to study environmental geography and started playing breaks & stuff at a few free parties & small student nights. In the second year I was head-of-music for the college radio station (one month FM RSL) and got to play for them at events as well as having a weekly 'solid-steel' type show mixing everything & anything I liked. In my final year saw I got to play some bigger DnB nights at UCL warming up for the big boys. Me and friends also ran a series of nights in a bar so we could all drink & play out semi-regularly.

On my return to Bristol (Summer 2001) I started getting involved in the blooming free party scene (I'd been going as a punter since 1994) and now play regularly on a couple of systems and at their 'non-rave' events. Through that I also met Ed (Punksi) and started playing as a resident for Concensus (though that has theoretically been wound up now).

Nowadays I'm firmly rooted in deep, dark, nasty drum and bass though I'm getting more and more into ragga & ragga jungle which is wicked to mix over the new DnB stuff. Im also trying to get into production though I have been quite slack & need to pull my finger out and put more time in.

Apart from drum and bass I listen to alot of reggae, dancehall, dub as well as hiphop, electronica, hardcore, breakcore, yardcore and loads more besides. I'm right fussy about my DnB though and tend to avoid the majority of soulful, funky, liquid, jump up, full cycle stuff as it simply does nothing for me.. Yeah, it's sooooo much better than trance, garage & pop but I'm still not a fan. I can fully appreciate why people like it and I also welcome a scene that is diverse as possible. It's just not my ting ya get meh!

I'm not a regular clubber either (Locus is about all I go to as a punter) but I like the pubs in Bristol & places like The Croft but I'm not really keen on the whole swanky cafe/bar explosion thats going on at the moment though (give me a grotty dive any day).

My mission for the next year or so is to get into making tunes properly and keep pushing the DJ'ing.
I eventually want to have a live PA (decks & kit). However, that requires a lot of time, money and effort but I'm geting there slowly.

I also have a full time job on a website for the government which lends itself to message board abuse quite nicely.

you are all so very interesting......... i'm mike and have been into d&b since it's early days from rave and used to go to early club nights like sutra and ruffneck ting, i'm into every thing about d&b, i buy far too many records and drive a volkswagen (my other pursuit) i try to get out to as many club nights as i can but it usually turns out to be drive-by and i'm shamed to say went to my first locus which was rit's last at level, but throughly enjoyed myself (when and where is the next one). I live in clifton (just moved from bedminster, got bored of having my car beaten up and abused by the ralph lauren wearing cavemen that used to breeze their way back through bedmo every friday & sat) and have lived in bristol all my life and stil love it. i'm a very shy, but friendly. I've got a bald head and glasses and will been seen sweating at a rave near you.

I'm Jim and I got into jungle when I came to Bristol as a student in '94. Been into it on and off ever since, particularly the last couple of years, because I finished being a student, got a job and can spend money on records. I like all styles, but am only really interested in tunes that have some kind of soul to them, or do something interesting and innovative. Outside dnb, I'm into hip-hop, breaks of most descriptions, bits of mostly older house and techno, bits of experimental electronica. I appreciate any music that has some depth and complexity to it, I spose. I'd like to list artists and labels, but I'd have to go through my entire collection to avoid leaving anything out...

Outside music, I'm a particle physicist working at Bristol Uni, which takes me abroad a lot  . I also like to climb rocks, ride powder, and mix & produce on a 'just for fun' basis.

HI I'm quite a new Hijacker, so I guess this thread is a good way to introduce myself.

My Name is Justin Sparey and I have DeeJayed under lots of different guises for many years. Started off going to raves in the early 90's, then as many other peeps did, went back to a mates house for a spliff and he/she would have a pair of decks to mess about on. After my first few raves I decided I wanted to be a DJ so bought a pair of decks (soundlab belt drives in my case, ummmmmm, belt drives!!) Anyway started playing Hardcore and Gabba Techno in the early 90's, then got bored of the way Rave was going and got into the next availiable pigeon holed sound which happened to be Jungle. Even though I listened/played Jungle for a length of time, I never hugely enjoyed it, OK there were a couple of tracks that were WICKED but a lot of it was shit. So after a year or so I got bored again and at this time I started going down lakota every Friday for techno (what was this night Called ) and Saturday for fluffy house at Fandago, so started getting into House and techno so started buying some records (I think it was at this time that I aquired my 1210's (ummmmm 1210's)) Anyway played House & Techno for a couple of years until I started getting bored AGAIN and got into the next fashionable sound that happended to be Speed Garage! Why? Purely because of the wicked Bass and rollin rydims. Speed garage didn't last very long as pretty much every tune sounded the same....What was next...well what was there left Hard Trance/Hard House and Hi-NRG techno!!! i put these three styles together beacuase one leaded into another and back and forth. I played this for music for the longest time without getting bored and was probably was the most successful genre of my DJin career cuz I was playing out almost every week from 98 to 2002 in the best clubs around Bristol, incl The Depot, Lakota & ECC. My resisdency was halted after 2 years due to the promoters going down the pan, but thankfully it was this moment that gave me the opertunity to re-think my musical plans and join-up with an old DnB head mate in Dj Virus, from which we have put together many tunes in the Studio and have big plans for the future....

Anyway getting bored of talking about my self again, regrets I have a few but I never regret playing so many different styles of music, some say that if I stuck to one genre, that I might be a big named DJ, and this may be true, but think how much music and lafter I would have missed out on. Also I think playing so many different styles of music has improved not only my mixing skills but my overall knowledge of dance music as we know it.

26 yrs old...

i left college did art for 3 years gave that up, worked at BT (who hasnt) for 2 years, bummed about abit for a year then djing piscked up.. played at nearly every bristol club at some point, then i realised how little money was in it unless you have extremely good contacts, so i got more into production, been producing for about 3-4 years, and i can say im nearly there!!! will be sending off demos soon, but im goin to try n actually get my own label setup rather than get signed, if that fails ill try n get signed...

for the last year ive been at music college and im hoping to stay there, but shit has got messy so who knows what will happen...

this sounds vague as hell but i honestly like all types of drum and bass, but generally not too many tracks from each sub-genre...
but i feel the dnb scene is getting a little stale, i mean roni size a few years ago was increadible, now he's churnin out crap... i rate Die highly atm tho...
drop bear is one of my faves...
i also really like anything breaks or tribal, talvin singh, botchit n scarper, meat katie, rennie pilgrem, klute, tee bee.. blah blah blah....
